A student of Baron Gros, Richard Parkes Bonington began his career illustrating historical novels, a literary genre that was then in full expansion. This scene, taken from Walter Scott's Kenilworth Castle, depicts Amy Robsart, the tragic heroine married to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and favorite of the Queen, who questions her about her titles and her new rank in the court of Elizabeth I.
