This scene, taken from Antoine de la Sale's novel, Le Petit Jehan de Saintré, presents the relationship of sponsorship and instruction in the chivalric tradition that the Lady of the Belles-Cousines has with the young hero. This novel, often considered the first of its kind in France (1456), inspired many painters in the troubadour style.
