Dimensions : 220 x 170 mm Three historiated initials attributable to the great Venetian painter Cristoforo CorteseCristoforo Cortese (active 1399-1445) occupied a prominent place in the book arts in Venice and Bologna in the 15th century . He is mentioned as a "miniator" around 1400 in a register (Mariegola) of the Scuola di S. Caterina dei Sacchi, (Venice, Museo Correr, MS. IV, 118) and in 1409 he is mentioned as "Cristo-foro de Cortesiis pictor". He signed "Xtoforus D. Correr" on the polyptych of the Virgin and Child with four saints (church of Altidona, Ascoli Piceno). Several other signed miniatures are known, including a figuration of the Funeral of St. Francis with the signature: "Xforu Cortexe venetus f." (Paris, Musée Marmottan, Coll. Wildenstein). "Cristoforo Cortese ranks among Italy's most important illuminators from the first half of the fifteenth century. The first major artist in Venice to paint in the late gothic style, Cortese was an extremely prolific artist who steered the course of Venetian illumination during his lifetime ... the careful attention to facial features ... especially in the eyes and hair, and the fine web of thin white lines overlaid on the foliage, are typical of Cortese's style" (Voekle and Wieck, The Bernard H. Breslauer Collection of Manuscript Illumination, 1992, no. 76).
