ERCOLANI (Giuseppe Maria). - Lot 72
ERCOLANI (Giuseppe Maria). I tre ordini d'architettura dorico, jonico, e corintio. Prefi dalle Fabbriche più celebri dell' Antica Roma, a posti in uso con un nuovo esattissimo metodo. Rome: Antonio de Rossi, 1744. - In-folio, 425 x 265 : x pp., (1 f.), 166 pp., (3 ff.), 76 plates. Ivory parchment, smooth spine, spotted edges (period binding). First edition of this architectural treatise by the clergyman and poet Giuseppe Maria Ercolani (1672-1759), member of the Accademia dell'Arcadia di Roma under the pseudonym of Neralco. After a description of the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders, the author studies three of Rome's most emblematic monuments: the Colosseum, the Pantheon and St. Peter's Basilica. The illustration includes a title vignette engraved by Carlo Grandi, a band at the head of the epistle, nine letterforms and six endpapers, all carefully engraved in intaglio. In addition, there are seventy-six architectural plates, including three folding ones. A good copy in contemporary binding. Stains to the binding, slight wear to the lower cover and to a corner. Some foxing and browned leaves. Small light spotting on the edge of the last leaves.
