GALIEN. Lanatomie des os du corps humain. Lyon : Étienne Dolet, 1541. - In-8, 153 x 104 : 47 pp. Jansenist red morocco, spine ribbed, framed in red morocco inside, decorated with a triple gilt fillet, red paper lining bordered with a double gilt fillet, endpapers of same paper, gilt edges (modern binding). Longeon, Bibliographie des œuvres d'Étienne Dolet, n° 142. Very rare first edition of the French translation given by Jean Canape of this anatomical treatise of Galen . It was printed by the famous Lyon printer Étienne Dolet (1509-1546), one of the great figures of the Renaissance and one of the glories of thought and typography, who was hanged and burned on the Place Maubert on August 3, 1546. The physician Jean Canape was a friend of Étienne Dolet . He was a public lecturer in surgery in Lyon and physician to François I, as well as a translator and popularizer of Galen and Guy de Chauliac. He is known to have been the first to give courses in surgery in French. This work is one of the witnesses of the fight led in the 16th century for the defense of the French language, a particularly lively fight concerning scientific subjects. Beautiful copy in modern morocco. Light staining in the lower margin of the first thirty-two pages.
