MECATTI (Giuseppe Maria). Naples : Giovanni Di Simone, 1752-[1754] . - 3 parts in one volume in-4, 217 x 159: (4 ff.), CCCCLX, LXXII pp. 7 plates. Stiff parchment, smooth spine, speckled edges (period binding). First edition dedicated to Philippe de Bourbon, duke of Parma. This work by the abbot Giuseppe Maria Mecatti gives what the author calls a "historical and philosophical relation of Vesuvius", with the description of the different known eruptions of this volcano. It was published for the first time in 1752 and was enriched several times until 1776, in order to add new observations, especially on the eruptions of 1754, 1766, 1770, etc. This copy includes the work of 1752 followed by the first two supplements concerning respectively the observations since August 1752 until July 1754, and the description of the two eruptions of December 1754. The first supplement is paginated while the second one is paginated separately, which is not always the case. The complete copies are very rare. This one, thus composed, contains five woodcut figures, four of which are in the text and one on a full page, as well as seven folding plates engraved on copper, showing different views of Vesuvius. A copy in a strictly period binding, well preserved despite the darkened spine and some soiling. Freckles, light spotting at the upper corner and inside of several leaves.
