PIIS (Pierre-Antoine-Augustin de). - Lot 88
PIIS (Pierre-Antoine-Augustin de). Chansons nouvelles... dedicated to Monseigneur Comte d'Artois. Paris : Defer de Maisonneuve, [1785]. - In-12, 151 x 87 : (2 ff.), 4, 48 pp., (2 ff.), 21 pp. of music, 13 plates. Dark blue morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate ribbed spine, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru). First edition. One of the most beautiful illustrated works of the 18th century, decorated with a dedication leaf engraved by Pierre-Philippe CHOFFARD (1730-1809) and twelve beautiful and fine figures engraved by Charles-Étienne Gaucher (1741-1804) after Jean-Jacques-François LE BARBIER (1738-1826). It also includes, at the end, twenty-one pages of engraved music. This edition coincides with the appointment of the author in 1784 as secretary interpreter of the Count of Artois to whom the edition is dedicated. It appeared indifferently at the address of Philippe-Denis Pierres, or, as here, of Defer de Maisonneuve. The differences between the two are the false title, the title as well as the paper used. While those addressed to Pierres are printed on a very slightly greenish wove paper, those of Maisonneuve are on creamy white wove paper. See on this subject the Bulletin du bibliophile of 1924, page 299-300. Very nice copy bound by Chambolle-Duru . The date has been written in ink on the title. The portrait of the author, which does not appear here but is sometimes found in copies, is not part of this edition, it is a later addition. Provenance: monogrammed bookplate, bearing the Latin motto "Amicus liber magis amica libertas", designed by J. van Driesten and engraved by Sylvain Guillot.
