VICO (Enea). Primor. XII caesarum verissimae imagines ex antiquis numismatib(us) desumptae. Addita per brevi cuiusque vitae descriptione, ac diligenti eorum, quae reperiri potuerunt numisimatum, aversæ partis de lineatione. Rome: Antonio Caranzano and Mattäus Greuter for Giacomo Mascardi, 1614. - In-4, 212 x 162 : 66 ff. (32 ff.). Soft parchment, smooth spine (contemporary binding). Third edition of this rare work by the Italian antiquarian and engraver Enea Vico (1523-1567), on the gold, silver and bronze medals of the twelve Caesars. The original edition appeared in 1553 and the second in 1554, under the title: Omnium Caesarum verissimae imagines ex antiquis numismatis desumptae. This third edition is thus the first posthumous one. It includes a beautiful engraved title, the same as the previous editions, and eighty-four full-page engravings, twelve of which are framed text and seventy-two are medals. This is a reprint of the second edition, with the same engravings but sometimes in a different order. Only the engraving on folio 50 recto has been redone, with the two subjects reversed. The thirty-two table leaves at the end are new. A very fine copy in contemporary binding. On the verso of the title there is a red wax stamp with the arms of a clergyman that we have not been able to identify. Light fading. Attached, from the same source : - LE MENESTRIER (Jean Baptiste). Medales illustrées des anciens empereurs et impératrices de Rome. Dijon : Pierre Palliot, 1642. - In-4, 217 x 173 : (4 ff.), 155 pp. miscalculated 153. Soft parchment, smooth spine (period binding). Rare first collective edition, revised, corrected and published by the bookseller-printmaker and heraldist Pierre Palliot (1608-1698), of the two works on the medals of the empresses and Roman emperors of the Burgundian numismatist Jean Baptiste Le Ménestrier (1564-1634). These two treatises were first published separately during the author's lifetime, in 1625 and 1627 respectively. the edition is dedicated to Jean Bouchu, first president of the parliament of Burgundy . The edition is dedicated to Jean Bouchu, first president of the parliament of Burgundy. It includes the arms of the dedicatee engraved in intaglio on the full page and one hundred and fourteen figures in the text, each representing the two sides of a medal, of which ninety-seven are engraved in intaglio and seventeen are engraved on wood. These are the same engravings as in the original editions. A very nice copy, perfectly preserved, with the same wax stamp on the title as on the previous work.
