VIRGILE. - Lot 94
VIRGILE. Bucolica, Georgica, et Æneis. Editio omni prorsus typographico mendo, typographi saltem judicio, expurgata. Paris : Pierre Didot, 1791. - In-folio, 371 x 250 : (2 ff.), iv, 513 pp. (1 f. blank). Red morocco, gilt decoration à la Du Seuil on the boards, ornate spine, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (Capé). Superb and rare typographical edition by Didot l'aîné, printed at only 100 copies on vellum paper, numbered, justified and signed by Pierre Didot on the verso of the last text leaf. COPY ENRICHED WITH THE CONTINUATION OF THE 23 ILLUSTRATIONS INTENDED FOR THE 1798 EDITION, IN A STATE BEFORE THE LETTER. In the preface, the editor announces the publication of this great edition, specifying that it will be illustrated by DAVID. The latter refused and entrusted two of his best pupils, GÉRARD and GIRODET, to realize the drawings. David seems however to have supervised the good execution of this work, and one of the plates is signed with his name. The suite includes twenty-three plates, including the frontispiece, engraved on copper by Baquoy, Beisson, Copia, Godefroy, Malbeste, Marais, Urbain Massard, Mathieu, Simonet and Vielh. Cohen mentions twenty-five engravings but the copies are quite complete in twenty-three plates. The proofs before the letter, as it is the case here, were printed at one hundred copies. A very nice copy in Capé morocco. Hinge of the first plate cracked at the height of the last box. Scattered foxing. Provenance : Mr. Baroche, with ex-libris.
