MONTESQUIOU (Robert de). - Lot 128
MONTESQUIOU (Robert de). The Bats. Clairs-obscurs. Paris : G. Richard, 1893. - In-4, 242 x 188 : (2 ff.), 493 pp., (1 f.), illustrated cover. Tan calf, spine and boards entirely covered with a pyrographed and painted decoration in brown ink and strewn with silver stars, smooth spine, inner edges decorated with a succession of silver stars, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (A. Meyer). Deluxe edition, partly original, in which three poems appear for the first time. Published one year after the first one, it is illustrated with a frontispiece, two compositions on the cover and a cul-de-lampe, by Whistler, Forain, Gandara and Yamamoto. Limited edition of 300 numbered copies; one of 250 on vellum. Remarkable and curious period binding by Alexandre Meyer, decorated on the boards and the spine with large original and fantastic compositions signed and pyrographed by Edgard Vial. The copy is further enriched by an autograph letter from the Marquise de Casa Fuerte, dedicatee of the work, 3 pages in-16, dated April or May 1898, addressed to Henri Monod (1843-1911), prefect of Finistère and Calvados, director of the Assistance publique and bibliophile. It has been bound opposite the dedication leaf. The latter indicates: "To L.T.B.F.A.F.B.C. Sidereal Person." Monod, in a note in pencil signed at the bottom of the page, gives this precision: "The Very Beautiful Flavie Amélie Filomène Balsorano Casa-Fuerte (This reading was revealed to me by the one she masks, on March 29, 1898, day when she had done me the honor to dine at my house. I showed her this book, which I loved, not to make her admire the binding, but to show her the attempt, rather unfortunate, to appropriate a binding to the subject of the work. She exclaimed: "but it is to me that it is dedicated, this book"! " In addition to this note, Monod has added notes and corrections to several of the poems in the collection . Some wear rubbing to the binding, sometimes touching the pyrographed decoration. Provenance: Henri Monod, with autograph notes.
