Quérard, La France littéraire, VII, pp. 538-539. First edition of this precious book offering a perfect synthesis of the knowledge that one had of India at the time . The main author of this work is the marquis Félix Renouard de Sainte-Croix (1767-1840). According to Quérard: "Before leaving India, M. de Sainte-Croix had left in the hands of M. Léger, prefect of the island of France, the manuscript of a considerable work on India. At the death of Mr. Léger (1813), this manuscript was sold with the other effects of his estate, and it is this manuscript which was printed and published... without M. P. (Pannelier) having made any changes to the text other than deletions. M. de Sainte-Croix, having returned to France only in 1817, could not prevent this plagiarism, nor publish his own work. " These six volumes deal successively with religion, religious opinions, sects, brames, religious ceremonies, marriages, births, funerals, the caste of rajahs, the military, the armies, trades, languages, arts, sciences, entertainment, natural history, etc . The edition is illustrated with one hundred and four beautiful plates, seven of which are folding and eight on double page, engraved on copper and enhanced in colors. A very fine copy, on laid paper, in a strictly period binding. Traces of wetness on some boards. Freckles and some traces of light wetness. Ink marks on page 40 in the third volume. One third of the folding plate facing page 108 of the last volume, representing a tiger hunting scene, is missing. Missing as sometimes the corresponding notice to the binder on pages 189-194 in the first volume.
