Bausart). First edition of this novel telling the story of a cursed family on which destiny is bearing down. "A curious book, which in many ways stands out from the rest of the work. Epigraphs in each chapter, a narrative written by the narrator, almost no landscape, few dialogues (...) It is the only narrator of this type in Giono's work, the only one who gives off an impression of unease (...).(...) The excess is here that of the destiny, not of the beings (...) All happens as if Giono had tried to adjust together elements too heterogeneous not to be incompatible " (Pierre Citron. Giono. Éditions du Seuil, 1990, pp. 437-438). He received the prize for the best French novel at the Grand Prix de Venise du roman international in 1953. One of the first 25 copies on Hollande Van Gelder laid paper, this one being one of the five hors commerce .
