LAM (Wifredo) - CHAR (René). - Lot 234
LAM (Wifredo) - CHAR (René). Against a dry house. [Paris] : Jean Hugues, [1975]. - Oblong folio, 380 x 552 : 38 pp, (5 ff. last two blank), printed cover. In sheets, filled cover, folder and case of the publisher. First illustrated edition, decorated with nine full-page black etchings and aquatints on tinted background, by Wifredo LAM (1902-1982). "All sorts of delays thwarted the realization of this book: the distance of the artist, the recourse to a Milanese engraver, the choice of a format of plates which doubled the size of the book initially planned. René Char had to wait five years for the engravings, which he judged "admirable" when he saw them, then he liked the book, "even if the jungle reaches it, with its convulsive lianas" (letter to Tina Jolas, 15 April 1976). Finally, the exhibition that was made at the Point Cardinal, the gallery of Jean Hughes, gave him the opportunity to write on Lam one of the most delicious texts that he devoted to a painter - From the Holy Family to the Right to Laziness " (René Char, BNF/Gallimard, 2007, n° 319). Limited edition of 175 copies on vellum of Rives, signed by the author and the artist at the justification. The engravings are not signed. This one is a publisher's copy, justified and signed by Jean Hugues, edition in addition to the 175 announced.
