MASSON (André) - PAULHAN (Jean). - Lot 242
MASSON (André) - PAULHAN (Jean). Les Hain-Teny. [Paris] : Les Bibliophiles de l'Union française, [1956]. - In-folio, 437 x 328 : (1 f.), 84 pp. (5 ff. last two blank), illustrated cover. In leaves, publisher's folder and slipcase. Very nice edition of this French translation by Jean Paulhan of the Hain-Teny, poetic and popular texts whose theme is very often love. It is illustrated by the painter André MASSON (1896-1987) with ten etchings and aquatints in colors, one of which is identical on the two covers and nine on the full page, as well as nine aquatints, one of which is on the title and eight on the titles of the parts. The text was first published in 1915 as a bilingual collection of poems and proverbs. Posted to Madagascar as a teacher for a few years, Jean Paulhan learned the Malagasy language which he later taught in France at the Ecole des Langues Orientales. Edition strictly limited to 116 copies on Auvergne du Moulin Richard de Bas, signed by Jean Paulhan, André Masson and the president of the society at the colophon. Missing the justification sheet with the number of the copy. Some transfers of the engravings, as always.
