Niccolò Vicentino (active early 16th c. )Clelia... - Lot 53 - Ader
Niccolò Vicentino (active early 16th c. )Clelia crossing the Tiber. 1608. Woodcut with three blocks, after Maturino. 422 x 282. Bartsch (vol. 12, Les Clairs-obscurs des maîtres italiens) VI-5. Very fine proof on thin laid paper, the fulling very noticeable on the reverse. Perceptible vertical drying fold in the middle. Thin oblique press fold across the branches at upper right; another horizontal one across the trunk at right. Ex-coll. count C. W. de Renesse-Breidbach (Lugt 1209); J. Cantacuzene (Lugt 4030) and A. Freiherr von Lana (Lugt 2773). In this second state described by Bartsch, the names of Maturino and Vicentino are replaced by the present inscription, the date 1608 and the monogram of the publisher Andrea Andreani and "the plate with the highlights has been similarly replaced by another plate, in which the waves of the Tiber river are expressed only by a few scattered highlights, while in the first proof these waves are made by numerous strokes that form steps like water cascading down." Differences are also noticeable in the sky, here more "blocked".
