Nicolas LANCRET (Paris 1690 - 1743) A pair of projects of caissons: the hunting with the pipée and the rest during the harvest Black stone, blur and white chalk highlights on blue paper. Annotations on the back. (Small stains). 20,5 x 25,5 cm each Provenance: Sotheby's sale, London, June 5, 1993, #88a and 88b, p. 53, reproduced. The drawing of La chasse à la pipée can be compared with two paintings by Lancret: one of the same name is now in the Wallace Collection (inv. p.436) and the other, entitled Le Printemps, is now in the Louvre (inv. 5597). The Rest during the Harvest can be compared to The Summer, now in the Louvre (inv. 5598). The last two paintings are part of a series executed by Lancret in 1738 for the Château de la Muette and exhibited at the Salon of that year (see G. Wildenstein, Lancret, Paris, les Beaux-Arts, 1924, pl. 10-11 and 118 reproduced).
