Banded agate snuffbox, China, 1750-1840 - Lot 58
Banded agate snuffbox, China, 1750-1840 Rectangular in shape with rounded shoulders, the honey-colored agate shows natural brown and light ochre inclusions circling the bottle. A white vein has been used to encircle the flask horizontally forming a so-called "ribbon" pattern. Oval in shape, the foot is worked in an opaque white vein evoking a traditional Chinese seal by a carved mark in relief in zhuanshu with four characters that can be translated as: 心 清 聞妙 - xin qing wen miao - "a clear mind and a wonderful heart". The bottle is extremely well hollowed out. Height: 5.9 cm A small chip on the outer edge of the opening dish. This decoration would evoke the jade belt worn by official officials, hence the appropriate position of the white band, just below the center line of the flask insinuating the vow to successfully ascend to the upper echelons of the administration. 1750-1840 - 玛瑙玉带纹扁瓶形鼻烟壶
