Trấn phong table screen, probably of imperial provenance, si - Lot 206
Trấn phong table screen, probably of imperial provenance, silver, vermeil and openwork jade plate, Vietnam, N'Guyen dynasty, late 19th - early 20th century It consists of two columns whose feet represent two Buddhist lions, their heads facing each other. Each foot is surmounted by a column around which, worked in repoussé, a dragon coils in the clouds in pursuit of the sacred pearl, surrounded by flames. The top of each column is decorated with a closed lotus button. The screen is in the center of a celadon jade plate with an openwork decoration of two hoho in flower scrolls, surrounded by a frieze of Greek. It is fixed in a gilt frame symbolizing an open scroll, the bottom of which is chiseled with starry tortoise shell motifs. Two large vertical reserves and five small horizontal ones surround the jade plate, the larger ones are decorated with a chased silver decoration on a gold background, on the left with a bird on a plum tree in bloom and on the right with a deer under a pine tree, the others represent precious Buddhist objects. On the top of the screen are chiseled and openworked two dragons facing the flaming jewel symbolized by a mobile carnelian bead. The lower part evokes a dragon in front, a shou character in its open mouth, in the middle of the clouds, the whole openwork and chiseled in light relief. Height: 16,8 cm; gross weight: 171 g Reference: For very similar screen models, see the gold one made to commemorate Emperor Khai dinh's fortieth birthday in 1924, sold at Christie's in 2008 and now in the National Museum of Vietnamese History. Another silver one is in the Museum of Antiquities of the Royal Court in Hue. The term Tran phong used for screens of all sizes is inspired by the shape of a partially unrolled imperial edict meant to reward high ranking officials.
