Pair of paintings on silk representing peasant scenes, China, 19th century Two album leaves, ink and polychrome on silk, decorated for one with peasants sharing a meal under the trees and for the other with a hunter carrying a crossbow and a woman picking cotton. Each painting is accompanied by a calligraphic poem in the upper right corner. On the first the following text: 拇雞性野 - 男子蓬首 - 女衣繡長不過腹 - 耕山好獵于隙地 - 植木棉花 - 纍纍如桃 - 廣西州属有之 which could be translated as: "A man and a woman of wild nature, the man shaggy the woman in a long embroidered dress. They cultivate their fields only for sustenance, hunt and gather on the mountains and riverbanks. The cotton tree is planted on their land and its flowers bloom like peaches. This scene can be found in Guangxi province. On the second: 黑土獠勤慎明禮 - 居多傍水 - 田事竣 - 携榼之野以報土神 - 祀畢 - 長者席地坐 - 少者跪進酒食 - 若享賓然 - 開化府属有之- "The Liao people of the black land are diligent, careful, and respectful in their ways. They often bring offerings to the water fields after work, to give thanks to the earth god. The elders sit on the ground while the younger generation kneels. They offer wine and food as if they were welcoming guests. This scene can be found in Kaifeng Prefecture. Unsigned. Blue silk frame. 30.5 x 23 cm The subjects of these two paintings are taken from the work 开化府民族图集 - Kaihua fu min zu tu ji - "Atlas of Ethnic Groups in Kaihua Prefecture" (Yunnan Province in southern China), the original of which was painted in the twenty-fourth year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1819) by Wang Wenbao (王文保). 十九世纪 - 绢本设色摹《开化府民族图集》画两幅
