CARTARI (Vincenzo). - Lot 35
CARTARI (Vincenzo). The Imagini De gli Dei de gli Antichi. Venice : Evangelista Deuchino, Giovanni Battista Pulciani, 1609. - In-4, stiff parchment, spine, red speckled edges (binding of the time). New edition of this famous work by the Italian mythographer Vincenzo Cartari (ca. 1531-1590). A treatise on the iconography of the classical deities, it was first published in 1556 and was a great success for two centuries, influencing many artists and writers. The author's ambition was to provide a complete mythological and iconographic repertoire on the subject. About twenty-five editions appeared successively, mostly in Latin but also in English, Italian, French and German. This Venetian edition contains 88 three-quarter page intaglio engravings and the publisher's mark also engraved in intaglio on the title. Traces of wetness without gravity on the boards; the title written in ink on the back is later than the binding. Mottling and worm work, the latter concentrated on the first few leaves with damage to the text.
