LINDLEY (Augustus Frederick). Ti-Ping Tien-Kwoh; the history of the Ti-Ping revolution, including A Narrative of the Author's Personal Adventures. London: Day & son, 1866. - 2 volumes in-8, purple cloth, boards and spine of the original hardback bound in (modern binding). First edition of this work giving an impassioned account of the memorable Taiping Rebellion of 1850-1864, which spread throughout southern China, resulting in the deaths of approximately 20 million people. Its author was the English Royal Nevy officer Augustus Frederick Lindley (1840-1873). Died at only 33 years old, he was a supporter of the rebels, and actively fought for them in this rebellion that rose against the ruling Quing dynasty, with the aim of imposing social, commercial and religious reforms. They were eventually crushed with the help of British and French forces. Before his death, Lindley was able to write this historical and anti-imperialist work. The second volume focuses particularly on the actions and character of General Charles Gordon, whose forces were responsible for many atrocities, but who enjoyed great popularity in Britain. It also details the effects of the British government's China policy. The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece, eighteen out-of-text chromolithographs and two maps. A copy in a modern binding with the original boards and spines of the cartonnage restored. Some foxing.
