In 1770, the Duke of Choiseul was the most powerful man in the kingdom after the king. But his enmity with the king's mistress (Madame du Barry) and his growing power made him suspicious in the eyes of Louis XV. The latter finally separated from his Prime Minister on December 24, 1770, and exiled him to his castle of Chanteloup. The Duke of Choiseul was throughout his life a great protector of the arts. The artist Anicet-Charles-Gabriel Lemonnier (1743-1824) painted a canvas representing an Allegory of the exile of the Duc de Choiseul in the same spirit as our drawing (sold in 2012 by the gallery Talabardon & Gautier at Waddesdon Manor).
