Jean-Auguste-Dominique INGRES (Montauban, 1780 - Paris, 1867 - Lot 213
Jean-Auguste-Dominique INGRES (Montauban, 1780 - Paris, 1867) Study of two heads of a sleeping child: presumed portrait of Lucie-Marie-Thérèse Marcotte de Quivières Black pencil. Signed lower right in black pencil "Ing. (Traces of tiling). 14.6 x 10.4 cm Provenance: - Remained in the model's family. By descent. - Anonymous sale, Christie's, Paris, March 25, 2015, n° 162. Bibliography: L.-A. Prat: "Ingres et Chennevières" in Ingres un homme à part, Paris, XXIIe rencontres de l'École du Louvre, 25-26 April 2006, December 2009, pp. 101-113 (see: p. 107). Lucie-Marie-Thérèse Marcotte de Quivières (1843-1933) was the daughter of Charles-Marie, the first administrative director of the Monnaies et Médailles de Paris, and Caroline Adam. Charles-Marie Marcotte de Quivières (1808-1875) was the nephew of Charles-Marie Marcotte d'Argenteuil (1780-1867), Ingres' great friend. From the physiognomy of the child depicted, we can give her between 18 months and four years of age, which, if it is indeed Lucie-Marie-Thérèse Marcotte de Quivières, would correspond to a date of execution around 1844-46. Director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1835, Ingres returned to Paris in 1841. After the death of his wife Madeleine Chapelle in 1849, Ingres married Delphine Ramel in 1852. The latter was also a relative of the Marcottes de Quivières. There is also a disturbing proximity to the sleeping child in The Virgin Adoring the Child (New York, private collection) executed around 1839 (see: Catalogue d'exposition Ingres, Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2006, n° 138, reproduced p. 328).
