Marie-Nicolas PONCE-CAMUS (Paris, 1778 -... - Lot 43 - Ader
Marie-Nicolas PONCE-CAMUS (Paris, 1778 - 1839) Portrait of the painter Pierre Revoil Original canvas Inscription on the reverse of the original canvas: "Revoil pupil of David who became / dear to the School of Lyon painted / by his comrade Ponce-Camus / as a studio study". 46 x 38 cm Provenance: Collection of Mme Rouillard, in 1878 and 1888. Bibliography : - H. Jouin, Notice historique et analytique des peintures, sculptures, tapestries, miniatures, enamels, drawings, etc. exhibited in the galleries of national portraits at the Trocadero Palace, Paris, 1878, p. 181, cat. 833. - H. Jouin, Musée de portraits d'artistes, Paris, 1888, p. 164. - M.-C. Chaudonneret, Fleury Richard and Pierre Revoil, la peinture troubadour, Paris, 1980, p. 123. Exhibition: Paris, Exposition universelle de 1878, Palais du Trocadéro, Galeries des portraits nationaux, cat. 833. Ponce-Camus painted the portrait of Révoil while both young men were students of David. This "studio study" explains the singular surface condition of the work, which is probably a reused canvas. If the pose and costume are similar to the self-portrait of Ponce-Camus (location unknown), the spirit is different. The nostalgia and delicacy that emanates from it reflects the character of the young painter.
