Prosper BARBOT (Nantes, 1798 - Chambellay, 1878) - Lot 99
Prosper BARBOT (Nantes, 1798 - Chambellay, 1878) Wave effect at Dieppe Paper mounted on canvas Titled and localized on the frame: "Effect of Waves at Dieppe Antique label on the back of the stretcher bearing the number: "244" or "241 Another label bearing the number : " 481 ". 27,3 x 37,3 cm Provenance: - Caroline Garnon (1838-1900), née Barbot, daughter of the artist. - Henriette Le Châtelier (1865-1934), née Garnon, daughter of the artist. - Georges Le Châtelier (1857-1935), husband of the previous one. - Caroline Bour (1883-1947), born Leroux, niece of the previous one. - It has remained in her descendants until today. Barbot began his studies in the studio of the architect Achille Leclère at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1816. In 1820, even though he was eligible for the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome, the artist preferred to go to Italy to complete his studies. Upon his return in July 1822, he finally abandoned architecture to devote himself to landscape painting and entered the studio of the painter Louis-Etienne Watelet. In 1826, he left for Italy for three years. There he met the new generation of landscape painters, including Coignet, Giroux, Brascassat, his fellow Angevin Bodinier, and Corot. Barbot's stay in Dieppe is not as well documented as his stay in Italy, but our plein-air study, done in front of the town's pier, shows Barbot's artistic evolution after his return to France. This very spare depiction gives pride of place to the atmospheric effects of untamed nature, showing Barbot's openness to the Romantic aesthetic.
