Joseph-Henri ROSNY aîné (1856-1940). Autograph... - Lot 172 - Ader
Joseph-Henri ROSNY aîné (1856-1940). Autograph manuscript signed, Le Termite, [1890]; 210 pages in-fol. and in-4 mounted on tabs, bound in one volume in-fol. black Russian half-leather with corners (corners dulled, caps rubbed). Complete manuscript, first draft, overloaded with erasures and corrections, of this novel of literary manners, which vigorously marks Rosny's break with naturalism, of which he makes a violent satire. The novel was published in La Nouvelle Revue from October 1 to November 15, 1886, and in volume by Albert Savine in 1890, with the subtitle "roman de mœurs littéraires". Let's quote Remy de Gourmont's review (Mercure de France, March 1890): "It is the analysis of love in the shriveled soul of a naturalist bent by the winds, pulverized by the thunderbolts of triumphant symbolism. This psychology (a series of marvelous visions whose breadth must contrast with the narrowness of the poor little nature in question) would seem more logical if it did not attack someone who himself mocked the failures of naturalism and who, since then, has risen, without losing his footing, to the rarest idealism. For in Servaise (the hero of this story) one thought one recognized Mr. Huysmans. This assimilation is repugnant to me, but I too had the impression, and it was very painful for me. I am therefore not qualified to judge this book in a sound manner: it will be of great interest to the literate and will amuse lovers of keys, who, under the Nolla, the Guadet, the Fombreuse of the novel (there are twenty others), will look for and find the Zola, the Daudet, the Goncourt of reality"... Former collection Daniel Sickles (VIII, 3446).
