Primer for little boys. Or little tables... - Lot 12 - Ader
Primer for little boys. Or little tables of the main games of childhood. Eleventh edition. At the Librairie de l'enfance et de la jeunesse, P. C. Lehuby, successor of M. Pierre Blanchard. Rue de Seine, n° 48. Paris. 1837. Printed by Prévot. Saint-Denis. In-12 (16,5 x 9,8 cm). 1 frontispiece, 72 pp. 3 engraved plates : green half-calf with small corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, burgundy calf title-piece (later binding). Beautiful primer illustrated with four plates of two fine engravings showing games. Beginning with a classical progressive method: alphabets, syllabary, it continues with a description of games "to read fluently". Nine games are described in the text, Le Jeu de balle, Le Jeu de la corde [à sauter], Le Cerf-volant, Les Petits Polissons [patineurs], Le Cheval fondu [saute-mouton], etc., all ending with a moral lesson, and eight with pictures. The body of characters diminishes as the book ends with a tale: Saturnin the Sneaky, Latin reading lessons, orations and numbers. Uncommon work in perfect condition.
