Alphabet of the joys of childhood. Wentzel,... - Lot 35 - Ader
Alphabet of the joys of childhood. Wentzel, Edit. Rue St Jacques 65. Paris. [Circa 1830]. (12,3 x 17 cm). Leporello of (14) lithographed and stenciled plates: publisher's ivy green chagrined paper boards, lithographed and colored title applied on the first board and framed with a gilt embossed paper frieze, a couple of young children and a doll in a vegetal frame. The joys of childhood nicely illustrated. One plate of colored alphabet and two letters per plate lithographed and colored with stencil (including the W). They show children in the happy moments of their lives - except the first day of school with tears and handkerchiefs. The captions of the images are unrelated to the initials of the plates: Corpus Christi, Easter Eggs, Mama's Day, etc. In this rare alphabet, everything is in vivid period colors, including the initials, some plates enhanced with a brush. Touching handwritten mention in ink on the reverse of the second plate: "Petit fanfan à Paris, face marché au fleur [sic], premier mai 1830 vive le roi." A very well preserved copy. Minimal rubbing on the spine and missing embossed paper frieze on the first cover.
