The Typographical Office. Elementary book,... - Lot 62 - Ader
The Typographical Office. Elementary book, for the use of children. Decorated with 24 pretty pictures of Arts and Crafts, suitable to interest the curiosity of children, and to make them love reading. At the Children's Shop, Didier & Tebbett, 75, St. James's Street, Pall-Mall. London. Printed by C. Spilbury, Angel-Court, Snowhill. 1808. In-16 (13.1 x 8.2 cm). 108 pp. 24 engraved plates : full shagreen, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and fillets, green morocco title-piece (Binding of the period). Rare French abécédaire published in London. This one owes its title to a single page [3] showing in boxes the initials of the alphabet in upper and lower case. Totally different from the method of learning to read invented by Louis Dumas (1676-1744). Twenty-four engraved plates showing trades, two for the J (Gardener and Goblet player) and the V (Vinegar maker and Grape picker), no K, nor x and Y, and, of course, no W. A didactic note of several pages on each trade completes this part of the work. Very interesting work certainly published in London for the children of emigrants still numerous in England and many of whom waited for the Restoration to return. Three quires slightly browned with three leaves with some cracks in the outer margin and foot, without affecting the text. Inside hinge cracked. Small rubs from use to the binding.
