COURTOIS (D. A. F.). Alphabet of Mgr. the... - Lot 147 - Ader
COURTOIS (D. A. F.). Alphabet of Mgr. the Count of Paris. In which children and foreigners are taught to read French by procedures that save teachers a lot of trouble and smooth out all the difficulties for the students. Dedicated to A S. R. Mme la Duchesse d'Orléans by D. A. F. Courtois. First class. Successive knowledge of simple letters, and reading of words and sentences by syllables of two of these letters. Deposited with the author in Lons-Le-Saunier. At Mrs. widow Maire-Nyon, quai Conti, n° 13 in Paris. At the Périsse brothers, grande rue Mercière in Lyon. [1844]. In-12 (16,7 x 10,7 cm). 8, 7, 24 pp. Followed by Second to Seventh class, each of 24 pp. Bound in one volume: burgundy half-chagrin, five-ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons with the title in a gilt frame (later binding of the late 19th century). Unique edition. After a presentation of the method follows a letter to Madame la Duchesse d'Orléans and the account of the author's setbacks in front of the administration which refused the diffusion of his work in elementary school. The author D. A. F. Courtois (1768-18 ?) wrote this work in 1816 and suffered for many years the vindictiveness of the administration. Then begins the first class practical course composed mainly of a syllabary emphasizing the difficulties. This system is adopted for the progressive readings of the following classes. Then the letters forming a sound are linked, the writings mixed in fables and historiettes, the bodies decrease. The seventh book deals with Latin reading, prayers, gothic and round letters. A well preserved copy. Provenance: Edouard de Lalaing, with his bookplate, author of numerous works at the end of the 19th century.
