GRAY (Henri). Pseudonym of Henri Boulanger. - Lot 185
GRAY (Henri). Pseudonym of Henri Boulanger. [Original drawings for Alphabet of good examples]. [Paris. ca. 1885]. 29 original drawings in India ink on fine paper (28 x 22 cm approx.) signed, applied to the front of the leaves of an in-4 album (29 x 23 cm) with, opposite, the corresponding pages of the book: bound in percaline framing the original red percaline cover of the book, also illustrated in black. (Binding of the time). Unique complete set of twenty-nine original ink drawings of the alphabet book published by Jules Lévy in 1885 and realized by the poster artist, draftsman and caricaturist, Henri Gray (1858-1924). Extreme delicacy of the line in originals of much larger format than the publication. Each table is signed, leaving the place to the future text of this primer of qualities: A, Amability, B, Good heart, C, Charity, etc. Twenty-six illustrated initials accompanied by the cover, title page, faux-title and last page, where the book falls from the hands of the sleeping grandfather. Small angular lack on the M of Modesty and the S of Wisdom. The facing pages of the originals have larger margins than those in the accompanying album: - BOULANGER (Mrs. P.). GRAY (Henri). Alphabet of good examples. Text by Mrs. P. Boulanger. Drawings by H. Gray. Jules Lévy publisher. [Paris. 1885]. Small in-8 (18,8 x 16,5 cm). (29) ff., printed in recto : publisher's blue-gray percaline boards, illustration stamped in black on the first plate in a double frame, triple frame and central fleuron on the second. Unique sought-after edition, very well preserved, a small restoration on the inner hinges.
