KUTSCHER (Rotraut). - Lot 220
KUTSCHER (Rotraut).
[Original model]. Malbuch. [Coloring book].
Verlag Otto Maier. Ravensburg. [Circa 1928]. Title page (21 x 26.5 cm) and 8 drawings (ca. 11.5 x 18 cm, in frame) on 6 ff. of heavy paper; black pencil and gouache in primary colors. The cover shows a young boy on a wooden horse with wheels in a setting of pedestaled wooden toys. Modern protective cover and slipcase, covered with blue paper (Atelier Devauchelle).
Rare original complete model by the German artist Rotraut Kutscher (Munich 1908-1986), illustrator, writer for children, poster artist, etc.
She studied at the age of 14 at the Munich School of Graphic Arts [Die graphische Berufschule]. Her precocious talent was rewarded with an exceptional scholarship that allowed her to continue her education at the Academy of Fine Arts [Akademie der Bildenden Künste] in 1926.
This was certainly her first work as an illustrator for a publication, and she kept all the freshness of a very innovative drawing. Her drawings are signed with her maiden name only. She met her husband, Meinhard Hinderks, in 1928.
Dazzling graphics where she combines geometric forms and extreme stylization. On a base of black grease pencil, she applies red, yellow, blue and green gouaches. Story without text but very readable of the journey of the little man on a horse with wheels.
Drawings perhaps too modern for the publisher, who will not publish the work, but with whom she will realize, in 1931, an album in the line of this Malbuch: Katei und Matei reisen in die Stadt, in which it will be a question of cutting the stylized forms in sheets of gummed paper to put the cubist drawing in colors.
After the large title drawing of the model, Rotraut Kutscher had drawn the eight sequences of the story on four vertically placed sheets, but later separated the first two, because she had reversed the drawings.
Unique and beautiful set perfectly preserved.
