OFFEL (Constant (Stan) van). Alphabet macabre. Editions of the Gallery Charlet. Brussels. 1925 (32,5 x 25,4 cm). Pearl grey cloth paper cover, with the title and a skull, containing (2) double ff. and (24) ff. free. First edition and first printing of a danse macabre, in twenty-four portraits, after ink drawings by the Belgian artist Stan van Offel (1885-1924). Illustrator and caricaturist, this alphabet was his last work and will be published posthumously. Preface and verses, captioning the plates, by Grégoire Le Roy (1862-1941), a French-speaking Belgian writer considered the father of symbolist dramaturgy. Twenty-four plates (no Y or W, as published) with extreme caustic elegance where Death takes a different character with each illustration: Actor, Shepherd, Coquette... and Zealot. Small limited edition of 250 copies, one of 200 on English laid paper after 50 on japon, n° 139. Cracks at the fold of the flaps of the folder and very small lack on the back.
