Pair of baluster-shaped vases in scagliola imitating porphyr - Lot 91
Pair of baluster-shaped vases in scagliola imitating porphyry, with handles featuring snakes joined by a garland, decorated with gadroons and standing on a pedestal; (small accidents).
Second quarter of the 19th century.
H. 100 cm
The model and size of these vases are identical to the pair of porphyry vases probably made in Rome at the end of the 18th century and seized from the home of Countess Du Barry during the French Revolution (Musée du Louvre). Inventories of the period describe several porphyry vases at the Château de Louveciennes, underscoring the former favorite's taste for this type of object.
The pair of vases from Louveciennes were subsequently exhibited at the Museum and then moved to the Tuileries Palace. Judged to be in poor condition, the administration sent them to the Louvre workshops for restoration; it was probably on this occasion that a mold was made, enabling them to be produced in a different material.
