AMELOT DE LA HOUSSAYE (Abraham Nicolas). - Lot 1
AMELOT DE LA HOUSSAYE (Abraham Nicolas). History of the government of Venice. Paris : Frédéric Leonard, 1677. - In-8, speckled tan calf, triple gilt fillet and gilt coat of arms in the center of the covers, smooth spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). New edition dedicated to the Marquis de Louvois, published one year after the original, of this critique of the Republic of Venice, which earned the author six months' imprisonment in the Bastille. Despite this, the book was a great success and was reprinted many times. Handsome copper-engraved band bearing the arms of the Marquis de Louvois at the head of the epistle. A precious copy for Madame de Pompadour, bound in her coat of arms. Another fine provenance is that of the playwright and historian Pierre-François Godard de Beauchamps (1689-1761), whose signature appears on the title. It is known that one of the first collections in Madame de Pompadour's library came from Godard de Beauchamps. The copy is described in the catalog of the sale of Madame de Pompadour's library under number 3133. Two volumes are mentioned, the second being the supplement missing here. Hinges and corners restored. Some light dampening. Provenance: Pierre-François Godard de Beauchamps, with his signature on the title. - Madame de Pompadour, with her coat of arms on the boards (cat. no. 3133). - Amédée Rigaud (1819-1873), with bookplate.
