DUGUAY-TROUIN (René). - Lot 13
DUGUAY-TROUIN (René).
Memoirs of Monsieur du Guay-Trouin, Lieutenant General of the Naval Armies of France, and Commander of the Royal & Military Order of Saint-Louis.
S.l., 1740 - In-4, marbled havana calf, gilt roulette framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (modern boards, old spine attached).
Definitive, posthumous edition, the best of these Memoirs written by René Duguay-Trouin during his voyages, continued by his brother-in-law Pierre Jazier de La Garde, and published by Godard de Beauchamps, friend of the famous privateer. They had already been published in Amsterdam in 1730 by Villepontoux, and in 1732 and 1734, by Mortier, but without the author's agreement.
The edition is decorated with a portrait by Larmessin, a vignette on the title and as a bandeau, an initials, a folding plan of the bay and city of Rio de Janeiro, drawn and engraved by Coquart, and 5 plates engraved in intaglio by Lebas, 4 of which are folding.
Binding restored, the boards are modern imitation and the original spine has been restored. Some foxing and browned leaves.
