GALIEN. - Lot 15
GALIEN. Omnia quae extant opera. Venice: Juntas, 1550. - 5 parts (out of 10) in three in-folio volumes, stiff parchment, ribbed spine (period binding). Second edition of this version of Galen's works, published in Latin by the Italian physician and translator Augustinus Gadaldinus (1515-1575). The first edition appeared in 1541-42. The work originally consisted of ten parts, each with its own title and foliotation, but with no indication of order. We have here only five of these ten parts, namely the first, second, fifth, ninth and tenth. Also missing is the index published in 1551 by Antonio Musa Brasavola. Each title is illustrated with a handsome wood-engraved frame depicting eight scenes from Galen's life, which had already been used for the 1541-42 edition. The first title is the only one to be printed in black and red and to feature the arms of the dedicatee, Cardinal Giovanni Salviati, printed in red with blue and yellow highlights. Inside, the illustration is limited to pretty ornaments that are repeated several times. Bindings faded, especially that of the first volume, with tears and lacks. Spines previously rebound. Title of second part torn but not missing. Some light wetness, scattered foxing. Minor worm damage. Missing the last blank leaf of the second part (V6). Tear with damage to text on folio 60 of the ninth part (Extra ordinem classium).
