Cologne, 1703. - 2 volumes in one in-12, jansenist havana morocco, ribbed spine, inner gilt lace, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet).
This edition, although noted as the third on the title, is in fact the fourth in French, compiled by Baron de Huyssen or Casimir Freschot (c. 1640-1720), a Benedictine of the Congregation of S.-Vanne. The work first appeared in Italian in 1667, and the first French version was given by Jean Vanel and published in 1689.
This is enriched, with separate pagination, with the conclave of Clement XI and a treatise on the origin of cardinals and legates. In this part, the pages of the 12 leaves making up the quire *E are paginated 99, with the exception of the last page which is paginated 100.
The illustrations include a frontispiece, two beautiful folding plates, the first depicting a plan and view of the conclave, the second a procession, and 14 copper-engraved vignettes in the text.
A very fine copy bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet for the French army staff captain, historian and bibliophile Eugène-Gabriel Marigues de Champ-Repus (1828-1892).
Scratches on the edge of the first cover.
Provenance: Eugène-Gabriel Marigues de Champ-Repus, with bookplate.
