CARBUCCIA (Jean-Lucien-Sébastien).
Algerian Army. Dromedaries as beasts of burden and war animals. Le Régiment des dromadaires À l'Armée d'Orient (1798-1801).
Paris: Librairie militaire de J. Dumaine, 1853. - In-8, eggplant half-chagrin, ornate spine, speckled edges (period binding).
Rare first edition of this work containing the two reports by general and archaeologist Jean-Lucien-Sébastien Carbuccia (1805-1854), in which all questions relating to the use of the dromedary are dealt with.
The first report, made in January 1844, is addressed to Marshal Bugeaud, Governor General of Algeria. It addressed "the natural history of the animal from a physiological point of view" and "its suitability as an animal of war". The second was written in July 1844. It also deals with the natural history of the dromedary, as well as its habits and hygiene, and examines convoys and the organization of mounted corps.
