HUGO (Victor). - Lot 74
HUGO (Victor). La Esmeralda. Opera in four acts, music by Mademoiselle Louise Bertin, words by M. Victor Hugo. Décors by MM. Philastre et Cambon. Paris : Maurice Schlesinger, Jonas, N. Barba ; Lyon : Nourtier, 1836. - In-8, paperback, in grey cloth-backed chemise and modern slipcase. Rare first edition of this libretto inspired by "Notre-Dame de Paris". The music was written by Louise Bertin, daughter of the director of the "Journal des débats" and a pupil of Berlioz. A paperback copy, as issued, complete with the two catalogs at the end. As is often the case, the frontispiece by Célestin Nanteuil is missing. A good copy, despite tears and missing corners and back cover.
