LEVI-STRAUSS (Claude). Tristes Tropiques. Paris: Librairie Plon, [1955]. - In-8, paperback, illustrated dust jacket. First edition of Claude Lévi-Strauss's most famous work, published in the "Terre Humaine" collection. It is illustrated with a map and over 50 full-page and in-text drawings, as well as 63 photographs. No large paper edition was made. Complete with the rare first-edition dust jacket, illustrated with a portrait of a native woman with a painted face, based on a drawing of a Caduveo woman. This copy has no mention of a thousand on the dust jacket, and is complete with the advertisement leaf at the end. It has been enriched by a visiting card from the author glued to the false title, bearing an autograph thank-you from the latter, in English, dated November 27, 1969. Folds, tears and some loss to dust jacket. Tear not missing at top of spine.
