DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU (Henri-Louis). Paris: H. L. Guérin, L. F. Delatour, 1760 - In-4, 253x190: (2 ff.), lxxx, 383, 27, 10 pp. 17 plates. Marbled calf, cold fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding). First edition forming the third part of Duhamel du Monceau's extensive Traité complet des bois et des forêts, published between 1755 and 1767. In this work, he wished to address as many people as possible, proposing "practices easy enough to carry out" to encourage landowners "to make themselves useful & to their families & to their country" (p. iv). The treatise is divided into 6 parts: Du Terrein: De l'Exposition & du choix des especes d'Arbres. - Different ways of multiplying trees. - How to raise young trees until they are ready to be planted in the place where they are to remain. - The planting of trees raised in nurseries; & several related subjects. - Large woods. - The maintenance of woods, and the restoration of degraded forests. The text is completed by two supplements, each with its own pagination, to two previously published works. The first contains additions to the Traité des arbres et arbustes (1755), and the second additions and corrections to the Traité de La physique des arbres (1758). The edition is illustrated with a vignette at the head of the preface and 17 intaglio folding plates, including one for the first supplement. Binding very skilfully restored. Provenance: F. Bruÿninex, with handwritten bookplate on first flyleaf.
