MARAT (Jean-Paul). - Lot 45
MARAT (Jean-Paul).
Recherches physiques sur le feu.
Paris: Cl. Ant. Jombert, 1780 -In-8, 208x134: (2 ff.), 202 pp, (1 f.), 7 plates. Marbled paper boards, smooth spine, red head, untrimmed (19th century binding).
First edition illustrated with 7 fold-out plates.
This is one of the first scientific works by the man who was to become one of the great figures of the French Revolution. The author sets out to oppose those who believe "that fire is an elementary being, whose matter, scattered throughout all bodies, remains hidden until it is brought together by movement" (introduction). He adds further: "Many of my Readers will stop here, & close the Book, convinced that nothing good can be said, after an assertion of this nature. I know that some opinions are so well established, that it would be ridiculous to attempt to destroy them: but it's not my fault, if this one has aged so many centuries. If these prejudiced people don't read me, what can I do? I will always be read by the few who think: the only ones whose judgment interests me."
Copy complete with privilege leaf, sometimes missing. It includes the signature "Le Dr. Marat" opposite the title. We cannot be certain that this is the author's autograph signature.
A copy in 19th-century hardback, with practically full margins, enriched by a portrait of Marat on Chine collé, engraved by Ferdinand.
Hinges cracked, headbands blemished, corners slightly dulled. Scattered foxing.
