Posterity has made this detail from a group photograph one of the most famous portraits of the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. At the time, Apollinaire was at the Italian Hospital on the Quai d'Orsay, in the company of other wounded. He had volunteered for service in the French army during the First World War, and in March 1916 received a shrapnel wound to the temple.
