Cong, 琮, ochre-beige jade with circular hollow interior and - Lot 188
Cong, 琮, ochre-beige jade with circular hollow interior and quadrangular exterior, China, Liangzhu culture, 3000-2000 B.C. (probably period) Square in cross-section, hollowed out into a cylinder with six levels, the cone is calcified in some places. A flat vertical band appears in the middle of each face. At the four corners, on either side of the central edge, are stylized masks. Each shows three horizontal bands in slight relief: in the upper part, two bands evoke a headdress and a head of hair, below which eyes, barely visible, are drawn by a circle. The third, shorter band simulates a mouth. Height: 23.5 cm; length: 8 cm
