Founded by Raoul Vast (1850-1889) and Gustave Ricouard (1853-1887), La Revue Réaliste was the fighting organ of these two self-proclaimed apostles of Realism. The program they formulated in the first issue opposed Romantic idealism to the scientific method, in line, they said, with the intellectual needs of the day. And in the second issue they declared: "Naturalism is a system; Realism is a method. Let others wallow in the exclusive study of ugliness. We won't go down that road. "(Cf. Les Cahiers naturalistes, n° 32, 1966, p. 138).
