Artemisia
Canvas
45 x 39.5 cm
(Old restorations, accident)
The ancient stories of Aulu-Gelle and Valère Maxime describe Queen Artemisia, drinking the ashes of her late husband, King Mausole d'Halicarnasse, which were bound in wine. This subject was very popular in the Baroque period, particularly in Bologna. These representations were included in cycles of illustrious men and women, as "exemplum virtutis" of courage and fidelity.
The particular morphology of this face can be found in late works by Lodovico Carracci, for example in the two female figures in the front row of The Nativity of the Virgin in the Bologna Pinacoteca.
