Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791). Mass for 4 voices with - Lot 140
Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791). Mass for 4 voices with accompaniment by 2 violins, 2 violas, cello and bass, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and organ... Score (Bonn and Cologne, N. Simrock [1821]; cotage 1815). Large in-8, [1 f. title]-302 p.; modern half blue cloth binding. First edition of the orchestral score of this Mass falsely attributed to Mozart [KV Anh. C1.04]. Text and music engraved. This Mass in G major was first published under Mozart's name by the London publisher Novello as Mozart's Twelfth Mass in an 1819 edition of The Voices. According to recent research, the author was probably the Viennese theater composer Wenzel Müller (1767-1835). The Mass was probably written between Mozart's death in 1791 and 1803, when a manuscript of the Mass was first mentioned in a library catalog. It had previously been attributed to Mainz music teacher and publisher Carl Zulehner (1770-1841), who sent the manuscript to Simrock. It has also been speculated that the music may have come from different composers. Nevertheless, the Mass is not lacking in musical quality and originality, particularly the fugal section of the Cum sancto spiritu in the Gloria is very close to Mozart's musical language. Stamp on title page of Max Keldorfer (1864-1939), Austrian composer and choirmaster.
