Born in Bruges, Luc Peire worked in Constant Permeke's studio and held his first exhibition in 1938 in his native city. He met Michel Seuphor in 1954 and began to develop his work towards a linear verticalism. In 1958, he took part in the Salon Réalités Nouvelles and moved to Paris, where he co-founded the Mesure group and met the poet Henri Chopin. From 1965 onwards, he began his series of graphies, consisting of stripes and striated lines. He has held several exhibitions, in Antwerp, Auckland, Milan, Knokke, Valencia and elsewhere. In 1982, he inaugurated the Place Carrée in Marne-la-Vallée and presented a major exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris (Luc Peire, 50 paintings from 1951 to 1988). He bequeathed his legacy to his foundation in Knokke and died in 1994.
