On June 22, 1940, Henri Cartier-Bresson was taken prisoner in the Vosges and sent to the Stalag. He escaped on February 10, 1943, went into hiding and returned to the Vosges to find his Leica buried before the war. He succeeded and met publisher and gallery owner Pierre Braun. "Braun wanted to launch a series of books on artists and writers. (...) He regularly left the farm to fulfill the assignment Pierre Braun had entrusted to him, meeting first Matisse in the winter of 1943-1944, then Bonnard at Le Cannet in February 1944, and many others".
